The Curry Trap

03 Jan 22 - New year, new opportunity to convince another unsuspecting friend to row an ocean with me. This time it’s Chris Ambler. Friends since day 1 of secondary school I knew it would be hard for him to say no to me.

We set a date to meet up for a curry like we always do when he is back in the country and I rehearsed my best emotionally manipulating speech. Trap set.

Fast forward a few days and the moment arrived. I delivered an Oscar worthy heartfelt invitation to join me on the ocean. Two best friends competing in the “worlds toughest row” achieving my dream and being Atlantic legends for the rest of time.

Chris A - Absolutely Fxxking not.

Maybe it wasn’t that hard to say no to me!? Deflated but not surprised I dropped it and normal service resumed. How’s work? How are the Dogs? etc..

Until…

Mid-sentence I hear it, the moment I had been hoping for. A curious “well how long will it take?” followed by a “How much will it cost?”. The hooks were in and I was living in his head rent free. I proceeded to give the hard sell for the next hour, stressing the fact that our partners will get at least 2 holidays out of it, working every angle I could.

As we left the restaurant and walked to our cars, he said he was in! Job done.

Operation CURRY TRAP was an outstanding success and Team FORCE HORIZON was born.
